History of Thai massage

HISTORY

Traditional Thai Massage is believed to have its origins in India medicine, with techniques handed down from teacher to pupil since the 3rd century BC. Chinese settlers may also have been influential in its development. Like other Eastern medical traditions, Thai massage is based on the concept of energy lines in the body, and it is closely connected with Buddhist teaching. It is sometimes known as Thai yoga massage because many of the stretches involved resemble yoga postures. 


Originally practiced by Buddhist monks in temples, traditional Thai massage works on the belief that Sen or energy lines run through the body. The trained therapist works on these energy lines to release any blockages and also to allow the muscles and joints to return to their optimal movement. During the treatment, the recipient can experience healing on physical, emotional and mental levels as her body's natural equilibrium is restored to balance. 

TREATMENT

Treatments start with the feet but focus on the legs, where the energy lines affecting the upper half of the body are located. The therapist treats the rest of the body by using her thumbs, hands, palms, knees and feet to manipulate the muscles and stretch them out.
